How safe is China for tourists-Tenzin Rigden-FINAL Use

How safe is China for tourists?

Overall, China is generally a safe destination for travelers. Let's examine how safety has significantly improved over the past 20 years.

China was not as safe in the past as it is today. Even as a local, I used to feel stressed when I walked on the streets of Guangzhou in 2007. I always felt that someone might grab my handbag. However, with changes since then, today, I feel very safe even when walking home at midnight after a night out with friends.

Improvements Over the Past 20 Years

Stronger Police Force and Community Policing: The Chinese government has increased the number of police officers and emphasized community policing, promoting interaction between police officers and residents. This proactive approach has helped reduce crime rates.

Utilizing Technology: Modern technologies such as big data analytics, surveillance cameras, and artificial intelligence have significantly improved crime prevention and investigation. For example, the "SkyNet" system provides 24/7 video surveillance, dramatically improving monitoring and response times to criminal activities.

More robust Legal Framework: The government has strengthened the legal framework by revising laws and increasing penalties for criminal activities. Stricter law enforcement standards and judicial procedures have been implemented to ensure fairness and transparency.

Effective Campaigns: Nationwide campaigns against drugs and organized crime have been effective in curbing the spread of these crimes, contributing to overall safety.

Rapid Response Mechanisms: Rapid response mechanisms have been established to handle emergencies. A 24-hour duty system and quick response teams ensure efficient incident management, safeguarding public security.

International Cooperation: The government has fortified international cooperation by participating in global anti-terrorism and anti-drug efforts and sharing information and experiences to combat transnational crime and terrorism threats.

Current Safety in China (2024)

Low Violent Crime Rate: Major cities like Beijing, Shanghai, and Guangzhou have low violent crime rates. You can walk around most areas safely, even at night. However, petty crimes like pickpocketing can occur in crowded tourist spots, so it's wise to stay alert.

Good Hygiene: Big cities are clean and organized, with daily city cleaning services. The government regularly inspects restaurants to ensure food safety. Public toilets are abundant, clean, and well-maintained, making finding facilities in shopping malls, viewpoints, and walking streets easy.

Stable Political Environment: China's political climate is stable, and citizens generally respect the government. While international media often raises concerns about human rights, many visitors find that talking to locals provides a different reality.

Strict Laws: China has stringent laws regarding drugs and gun control, contributing to its safe environment. Chinese policemen are responsible and effective, ever ready to assist when required.

Friendly People: Chinese people are generally friendly and helpful, particularly towards foreigners. While language can be a barrier in less touristy areas, translation apps, and patience usually overcome this challenge. Interacting with local people enhances the authenticity of your visit. Consider using a reliable local travel agent to avoid the complexities of planning a trip.
